What are lash extensions?
Lash extensions are individual light-weight fibers that mimic our natural lashes, and are made of either synthetic pbt, silk , or authentic mink. Mink is not commonly used anymore, due to the animal cruelty laws and eye irritations that some people have experienced. Each extension is applied to an eyelash as a single fiber (classic style ), or in multiples (as a volume fan). The sizes and curl type of extensions will vary , and the finished look will depend on your eye shape and density of your natural lashes. Extensions are not applied to the skin like strips or cluster/ individual lashes; they are only applied to whatever healthy lash hairs you currently have. With proper maintenance and aftercare, a full set of extensions can last anywhere from two to four weeks on average. Our growth cycles will also affect the retention rate of extensions. Each lash is in a different growth cycle, and usually a couple will shed every day. We don’t tend to notice this shedding as much due to the size , rate of growth , and angle with which we see our lashes. Over time , as the lashes and extensions shed, you will notice the full set becoming less full. This is normal , and an indication that it’s time for a fill-in of new lashes .
Now that we got the basics out of the way , it is important to understand how to care for your newly found eye curtains:
Do NOT use mascara on your extensions. There is literally no need ! If the lashes are looking sparse, then it is time to book a fill-in appointment.
Do NOT attempt to curl them or use heat on or near them, they WILL melt. They are made of fiber, not tungsten.
Do NOT try to remove them yourself by picking or rubbing them off. You are at a high risk of damaging your own lashes. Please get them removed by a professional to avoid the heartache.
Do NOT use oily products on them . Oil is what breaks down the adhesive prematurely , and affects retention. Using moisturizers on your face is fine, just try to avoid getting product directly on the lashes.
DO wash them . Mainly wash the area between the extensions and eyelids, the lash line itself, to remove build-up. Oils, old skin cells, makeup, bacteria, and tiny lash mites live in those crevices. So please make sure to do your part at home to avoid possible infections ! Don’t be alarmed at seeing lashes that may come off during the wash , this is normal. It means that they were at the end of their cycle, and now new lashes are growing into place.
DO be gentle . When they start to get tangly and wonky , use your mascara wand to brush them back into place. Brushing them helps move the old shed lashes out. Don’t be sad to see them go, it was just their time.
